Porus Vazifdar | | Having collected paintings for a few years and sculpture for even less and having seen the rise in their popularity, I wonder whether photography could be the sequel to the story?
Is photography more than just a preserver of history? Most photographers and photography in general would have played second fiddle to or been service providers to other professions viz journalism, designing and architecture. Photographers whose names come to mind viz. Raja Deen Dayal, Homai Vyarawalla, Atmaram(?) Bhende are all old timers. Where is the new breed? Is it that technology is so well advanced that photography is no longer an art?
While these questions certainly need answers, the following questions (in random order) are more relevant to photography as an art form:
Who are the well known Indian art photographers.
How are prices determined for photographs?
What are the demographics and of collectors and what drives them to collect photos.?
Where is photography in the world of art?
Do collectible or art photographs have a particular size?
Are older photos more valuable than recent ones?
Are touched up photos closer to ‘art’?
We will need to answer a lot more questions than these to understand the place of photography in the art world.

* I have seen & enjoyed remarkable photographs of Jyoti Bhatt, Akbar Padamsee, and Paresh Maity.
* Others include Riyas Komu, Amita Dube, Vivian Sundram, Rajeev Lochan and Shibu Arakkal(is doing relatively well from the start of his career, son of Yusuf Arakkal).
* Occasionally artists too experiment like Laxman Aelay, Fawad Tamkanat, DLN Reddy, and Rammana Reddy.

How are prices determined for photographs?
* These reflect on the edition size again similar to limited edition, very often the edition size is less than 10 and some are single edition prints of one size.
What are the demographics and of collectors and what drives them to collect photos?
* Usually corporates go for these since they are easier to handle and also to afford them.
Where is photography in the world of art?
* Little ahead of infant stage.........
Do collectible or art photographs have a particular size?
* Nope (some prints are customized to your order)
Are older photos more valuable than recent ones?
* Depends on the subject > geographic representation keep changing and photography was meant to document these changes so an old photograph of 'Mumbai's Marine drive scene' without clutter would be more valuable than recent photo of visual pollution i would say.....
Are touched up photos closer to ‘art’?
* This will be a big discussion to follow.....
A lot of young people are experimenting with pure "tearing up of photos and creating Art" so from my side i wish to make no comments..........
I am also learning and wish to learn more and more .......

checking in after a while. am a bit rushed now but am putting down some thoughts -
photography has tremendous potential - landscapes and nature photography (international ex. - ansel adams) are all instantly accepted by viewers across the board. Portraitures and human studies may take a longer time to find an eye's favour. Internationally, names like annie leibowitz, richard avedon, helmut newton, herb ritts and many others have made a huge name in portraits.
in the indian context, we had a fantastic showing of some great images at the recently concluded Arles exposition. this was curated by devika daulet-singh and showed some very powerful work by anay mann, siya singh, dayanita singh, bharat sikka. there was a rare body of phenomenal vintage images taken by umrao singh shergil (amrita's father) on view as well.
you mention a line about photography being the preserver of history - i believe every important work of art plays that role. when viewing works from 2007 in 2077, i hope there is a clear suggestion/insight into where we stood at that time (our present). photography, journalistic or amateur, undoubtedly plays a role in capturing moments in time - done by a talented, practiced hand and eye, it is regarded as art.

How are prices determined for photographs?
like all other artforms, the standing of the artist and his importance makes a difference to the value of his work. photography is sold in editions (much like etchings/serigraphs) the general run should not exceed 8-12. the prices increase with the editions: ed. 1-3 for value x; ed. 4-6 for value xx and so on.
What are the demographics and of collectors and what drives them to collect photos.?
is a passion i guess like collectorship should be and goes without saying, will only find more numbers with time. photography was/still is not being treated as an artform in the true sense of the word. this will change and so will perceptions.
Do collectible or art photographs have a particular size?
the canvas size is generally variable though many prefer to show their works in a 2 by 3 / 3 by 4 canvas size - usable dimensions. but it does vary.
Are older photos more valuable than recent ones?

I am in the same position....I always have been thinking photography has no secondary market whatsoever in India atleast!
I have seen some beautiful shows by Raghu Rai and Ashok Salian...
Y'day there was a Bollywood Photography show in Bombay by PNC, each photograph was from there own past and present films...priced between INR 100k to INR 150k each!
I would be happy for those who have exp and insights on this market come here and share with us, and enlighten us pls?!

Each segment; like photography/sculpture/artist-painted furnitures/curios etc., offer good returns (also it would be delightful to own something that no one dares to) to those who take the plunge when the exposure and awareness is very limited and also when it has not caught the fancy of accumulators.
Once the accumulators start buying then the collectors would not be able to buy good ones but left to buy what ever is left over, which may not be that qualitative.

Venkatesh, Nishant, Anita and Shankar subramanian are holding this photo exhibition showcasing a collection of photographs that were captured during travel, besides showcasing works, they would also like to raise funds for Jagruthi - a Bangalore based voluntary organization working with children affected with AIDs. Pixetra has also extended their support to us.
The inauguration is on 7th of September at 5 PM at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad, Kumarakrupa Road, Bangalore, and they are going to have interactive sessions with Anand Sharan and Dr. Manoj Sindagi on 8th and 9th of September, respectively.

In the US the twentieth century saw a concerted attempt by curators and gallery owners to promote fine art photography. Several new galleries solely dedicated to photography were opened.
The subjects ranged from portraits, travel, nudes, documentary to black and white photography.
The last decade saw numerous online forums selling fine art photography.
The Indian contemporary art market is seeing what I would call an ‘attempt’ at promoting and showcasing photography as an art form through both online and offline mediums (exhibitions, publications). This is clearly evident by the increase in the number of photography shows the capital has witnessed in the last year…
What we really need is a dedicated approach at promoting photography and a change in perception which I guess will only come with time. The dynamics of the Indian art market changed completely with the growth of art galleries as intermediaries between the artists and the collectors… At the moment among the sprouting number of art galleries, both old and new, only a few are open to photography exhibitions. I think with time this will change..
About a month ago we launched ImageForte, focused on promoting and showcasing fine art photography. The website showcases a carefully selected range of photographic prints for collectors, corporates and art enthusiasts.
Among the well known photographers in India are Raghu Rai, Rupinder Khullar, S.Paul, Dayanita Singh, S.Paul, Avinash Pasricha, Prabuddha Dasgupta many others….
Fine art photography prints are available in limited editions, generally ranging from 10 to 15 and some photographs are of single edition. It’s not mandatory that prices increase with the editions…
The size of prints varies. We are offering three sizes at the moment but we also customize depending on the order.
I don’t think older photos are more valuable than newer ones. The link about the USD 2.2 m photograph is a case in point!
Demographics - At the moment corporates and individual buyers.

Photographs & Albums of Great masters of photography like Raja Deendayal, Hooper, Samuel Bourne or Bourne and Sheppard command very good prices in auctions all over the world.
Learnt a lot from this post on contemporary fine art photography.
My gallery is doing a show of about 8 photographers from Hyderabad next month, will keep you all posted.

Pushpamala is known abroad for her installations and new media works, I somehow do not have any fancy to these kind of photographs by any artist for that matter. Some people go purely by the hot names disregardful whether they look good on the walls or not.

I would like to give my opinion on some of the questions/issues raised here.
Yes, photography is a preserver of history, but that is one of the roles it plays, there are a lot of roles that photography plays:
Commercial.
Photo Journalism.
Fine Art Photography.
Although I am not one for definitions, as they are almost always restrictive, This is the Definition of Fine Art Photography as per Wikipedia.
"Fine art photography refers to photographs that are created to fulfill the creative vision of the artist. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism and commercial photography. Photojournalism is to promote an editorial point of view. Commercial photography's main focus being to sell a product or service.
The final creative reason for a fine art photograph is the photograph itself. It is not a means to another end except perhaps to please those besides the photographer who beholds it.
Fine art photography can be used to promote something. They are created most importantly to be true to the artist's vision of beauty. We can see this by looking at Ansel Adams' work of Yosemite and Yellowstone. Ansel is one of the least disputed fine art photographers of the 20th century and an avid promoter of conservation. He hoped to have these wonders protected. The photographs were still not created to raise awareness of anything. They were done simply to be true to his artistic vision. This is an example of how fine art photography that is created simply to be true to artistic vision can be used for effect."

Internationally, photography is almost at par with painting as far as recognition as an art form is concerned. In India, it has also started happening now.
A lot of my buyers are art collectors, and are buying photographs, as they are very reasonably priced right now.
Who are the well known Indian art photographers?
That a long list – and cannot be answered without a certain bias – Dayanita Singh, Raghu Rai, S. Paul.
Then there is Sunil Gupta, Pradudha Dasgupta, Karan Khanna, Dinesh Khanna etc.
How are prices determined for photographs?
Like in painting, by photographer and size. Also by the no of editions and the edition no.
What are the demographics and of collectors and what drives them to collect photos.?
Most of my buyers are people in Metros under the 45-50 age group. Also Corporates, Hospitals and Hotels.
Where is photography in the world of art?
That is very difficult to answer, and I guess my opinion will be biased.
But, based on International trends, it can only gain importance and go up the ladder, specially since its in its infancy right now (in India).
Do collectible or art photographs have a particular size?
No. Most photographers have their own prefernces and many of them offer more than one size
Are older photos more valuable than recent ones?
No. It depends on the person behind the work.
Are touched up photos closer to ‘art’?
No.
Although photographs is a good investment, in my opinion it’s a long term investment – 3 to 5 years. As per the show ‘The Art of Investing’ on CNN-IBN, it should give a return of 500% in 3 years. The prices for photographs is quite expensive internationally, and galleries from abroad are picking up works of Indian photographers, as they are relatively ‘cheap’ right now. So, prices should reach international levels in a few years.

I’m putting it in stock parlance – I hope that will be easier to understand.
All the people mentioned above are, without doubt, great.
But:
1. They are already blue chips – everyone knows who there are (even internationally) and that reflects in their price.
2. There are some painters on that list, who have got into photography and are cashing in on their name.
To seriously look at the market, apart from the abovementioned list, one may also want to look at emerging blue chips and mid caps.
This is because:
1. They have not been internationally recognized.
2. Unlike painters, photographers always had another source of income – commercial work. Once the market for art photography opened up, a lot of photographers started given this preference over commercial work. But, since the market is at its infancy, to mention a certain level of income (which commercial work ensured), they are keeping their prices reasonable (actually under pricing themselves, in my opinion, but then, what would I know) so they can sell regularly.
I am not going to name people, as my opinion is going to sound biased. But I would suggest you decide for yourself by looking at a photographers body of work – it is all available on the net – if there is any specific persons work you are looking for and can’t find it, pls let me know and I will try and point you in the right direction. Also, see how international the work looks to you – the more international it is, the better the chance of it getting pickup by galleries abroad – and honestly, in photography, that’s where the money is right now.
