Does anybody know how much of a premium the Artist proof edition commands over the regular edition lithographs?

** An artist takes few number of copies after 'a set of limited editions' for his own use to distribute or to keep as a reference
** If the artist decides to sell them off as A/P then certainly the price would be much less than the limited edition prices in few cases....
** These prints are also given to close friends freely and these come to the market in the form of second sale and hence command less price more often.

In my opinion, an artist proof shouldn't normally be bought (or sold).
It should either remain with the artist or can be gifted by him.
If it is sold, price should be lower than the editioned work.
Honestly, in a lot of cases, its a way to milk your good work, by keeping the option to sell another edition if the editioned works is sold out, and there is a demand for the work. Private Reply to Ajay Rajgarhia |

U V Umesh | | Let me further add few lines.
** In few cases galleries take advantage when the artist gives the plate to take the final number of editions.
After a set of editions, few more number of prints are taken without the knowledge of the artist and after few months or years the artist is made to sign as A/P in return for some obligation.
** Few artists have set up their own personal graphic studio's, under these circumstances they take out prints of old plates after some time as public memory goes down and bring on these series and sell them off with A/P.
However serious professional artists do destroy the plates or paint them over with color and also sell the painted plate itself as one of the artwork........
