Hi Mehul,

This is the best news I heard in a long time!
Went through their site, seems to be quite organised and just like any of these big business summits.
What amazes me is how come this kind of stuff never happened in delhi earlier, given the fact that the art industry in India is growing so fast. But better late than never!

hey when Nalini told me about this almost a month and half ago i was excited. then i did some looking up and got to know who is promoting this thing - well Anjolie Ela Menon is doing her rounds promoting it. Hanmer and partners are the organisers so it will well hosted.

my doubts: is it going to be a place where people will show off their best paintings at horrid prices or is it going to be a place where everyone who has everybit of a square inch of a canvas is going to be selling? QUALITY of not only the works but also of the platform is important.

seocndly i feel the networking and the shout outs of existance might be good so lets see what the discussions are all about.

since i am here i take up the responsibility of updating the junta on this forum on daily basis on the days of the summit. let me know which of you plan to attend so we can connect there.

Hi Mehul,

I've had many queries regarding this, but honestly I'm not sure how the event is going to turn out. Anjolie Ela Menon was in B'lore recently and she was v enthu about it.

I tried to register on their website, but have not recd any confirmation from them. Their rep in B'lore was extremely proactive some time ago when looking for press coverage! But, nothing since then!

Hopefully, this is an isolated instance and it will eventually work out great! As Sonali also said, it should be a good place for networking.

Hi

India Art Summit is the sort of like the first serious Indian Art Fair to happen. It seems quite a few galleries are participating, Tao, Vadehra, Art Alive, Nature Morte, Palette, Espace, Sanskriti, Apparao are among them.

There will also be a forum where some people from the international art fraternity are invited to speak - Philip Hoffman, Hugo Weilhe, Deborah Swallow, and Rob Dean included. Abhay Sardesai will the moderator.

They have Art India, Asian Art News, and CNN-IBN as their media partners.

Let's see how this shapes up. Personally I feel it's my obligation as someone in the art frat to support such ventures.

Art fairs have become really big around the world. It's high time we had something like that start in India. I wouldn't like to shoot this down just yet....

I applaud your wise and positive words and sentiments.Very well expressed, especially in view of the fact that I recollect it being said,I think on here, that the major galleries hate eachother to the extent of not even being speaking terms with eachother.
I hope atleast lovers at least will support such a national level event.

Hello Friends,

I have a little announcement to make.

I have started to work with young talented artists and created a website called

www.emergingworldart.com

Its almost essentially complete and please do have a look.

My first outing is taking part in the India Art Summit,New Delhi,22nd August-24th August 2008.I shall be bringing 4/5 emerging artists from the UK .
Its an experiment to see if India's current love affair with Contemporary Art extends to other countries besides India.

Eventually I have the very modest plan to create a global emerging artists exchange..:-)))))

Any comments from Art Savvy friends on here will be most welcome.

And I cordially invite you all to visit my booth at the Show. That will also be an opportunity for us to meet.

A bientot,

Anil

Dear Anil,

One more sincere suggestion obviously if it makes sense for u.

Announce your prices and let people buy online using credit, debit, paypal and all of it!

Transparency excites a user a lot an gives them a idea what's within there reach!

I also think this is one of the biggest differentiator and winner with regards SaffronArt!

Visions Art
Hello Everyone

It sounds exciting and would have to wait and see how this one turns up...The previous attempt of an art fair was a small scale disaster.

We have few very good galleries and artists. However just selection criteria could have been better for galleries and artists.

We all would get to see a lot of secondary sales ,while you would have fine quality works with extra fine prices.

The Opening would be worth attending. However would have been more interesting if we had few more international panelist and curators like 'Betty Seid' and international museum curators to make this more booming.

Im assuming a lot of presales in this fair.lets hope this ones a good start.

I would be attending the fair all 3 days and would be open to network with people who would like to catch up.

Thanks

Aashu

My feedback

The sales were good, but what was more exciting was the great response in terms of the no of people who visited the stall to look at the work, including Christies, Sothebys, and The Wall Street Journal also interviewed me for a story they are doing on the market for art photography in India.

The traffic on the website has increased substantially due to the awareness created for Wonderwall.

All in all, it was a great fair for Wonderwall. And for fine art photography.

Sonali Engineer
i visited on day one only so i do not know about the confernce bit but here is my take on it:
wonderwal was a breath of fresh air there.
Anil's gallery has some good artists
triveda had good art mix - bengal and upcoming
ashok gallery was too crowded so i backed out
dhoomimal had one husain print
gallery art alive was very good
Rob Dean and nature morte were ok but the gallery owners persona was stronger

all in all it was good but what i saw was some genuinely good fresh work - (there was a fake Souza there which i think many noticed). lots of new artists work was being promoted and on the whole was a mildly nice experience but we do have a long way to go to get to Basel standards... we will do it eventually.

can someone tell us how was the conference on saturday???

thank you

Ashok Nayak
Grand Success of India's First International Art Fair
- The Global Art Market all set for India Art Summit 2009
The recent Art Summit was the Indian art scene’s attempt to climb a new rung in its international aspirations, says NISHA SUSAN
An astounding 10,000 art enthusiasts walked in to witness India's First International Art Fair, India Art Summit(TM) 2008, firmly establishing it as a one stop destination for art in India. With an overwhelming mix of art collectors, artists, critics, curators, students and art enthusiasts from across India and overseas, the Summit achieved exactly what it set out to - making art, and the knowledge of art, accessible to a widespread audience. Commercially speaking, the fair clocked in a record sale of approximately 50%, with the 34 participating galleries selling over 280 artworks worth Rs.10 crores approximately. Given that the total value of the 550 artworks on display was approximately Rs. 20 crores, India Art Summit has emerged as one of the most successful first editions of any art fair across the world.
With all eyes now on India, event producers Hanmer MS&L, have announced plans to schedule India Art Summit 2009 between 19th - 22nd August' 2009 in New Delhi. Next year, the fair is proposed to be over three times bigger and applications are already pouring in from across India and world. While in the first year, the focus was largely on Indian art and Indian galleries, the second year will see participation from galleries across the world showcasing a sizeable array of artworks from different parts of the world.
Ashok Art Gallery is a five-yearold Delhi gallery that largely functions online. A mom-and-pop operation with a handful of unknown artists, Ashok Art Gallery has never had any exposure in the media. Their only previous art fair experience was with the Mumbai art expo earlier this year. As one among 35 galleries that participated in the recent India Art Summit (between August 22 and 25), Ashok Art Gallery did not expect to become frontpage news. But their 27-year-old Oriya artist Kanta Kishore’s marble sculptures of rolled-up newspapers were sold within hours of the fair’s opening. Gallerists Ashok Nayak and Kavita Vig, Kavita’s husband Bharat and septuagenarian mother-in-law watched astonished as the art young Indian superstar Subodh Gupta and politician Maneka Gandhi came to their stall. And in their wake, thousands of visitors and the press.

Sculptures and installations sold almost as well as paintings, signalling a new trend. The panel of speakers and choice of topics at the Art Forum also drew many accolades and was deemed as amongst one of the best such initiatives of its kind, internationally.

India Art Summit - Backgrounder
The art fraternity in India has for long felt a gap and the need for a collaborative industry platform in the country owing to the phenomenal growth and global interest in Indian art. While the art fraternity the world over gets numerous opportunities to interact and collaborate through various art fairs, biennales & expos, there was no such platform in India. Therefore the time was right for India to offer a suitable platform for art. The initiative has received invaluable recognition and endorsement from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Sotheby's.
The Summit hopes to achieve the dual purpose of, on one hand, serving as a window for International collectors to get a single access point to Indian art and, on the other, exposing the Indian collectors to a range of global Art that will be showcased at the fair in the coming years. More than just a place for buying and selling art, this initiative will enable diverse stakeholders from India and around the world to come together and discuss the creative and commercial aspects of Indian art.

Today, Indian art is greatly appreciated both internationally and within the country, annually growing at 30-35%, the Indian art market is currently worth Rs 1500 crores. The Indian art market has gone up by 485 percent in the last decade making it the fourth most buoyant art market in the world. The total auction market size of Indian art has changed from US $5 million in 2003 - just five years back - to nearly US $150 million this year.
